When you think of the West Coast, most people think of the open ocean, but Newport Beach has one of the greatest little harbors in the area as well. And the best way to explore it is by renting a little Duffy boat (native to Newport…not really, but kind of).
In my previous blog post Top Five Things To Do In Newport Beach, I mentioned renting a Duffy boat and cruising Newport Harbor. It really is a great way to, not only have a relaxing time in one of the most beautiful harbors in the world, but it is a great chance to see spots in the city not accessible by car or sometimes even by foot. And how much more tranquil can it get cruising in a small quiet boat around the harbor?
A few things about a Duffy boat, in case you’ve never heard of one, is that they are small, electric powered cruisers meant for calmer, harbor waters. Nearly all have a canopy top and window enclosures all around the boat. Like most boats, they also have a stereo hook up for your own music. These boats really are perfect for a fun afternoon or evening out
Newport Harbor is the largest recreational boat harbor on the west coast, so you will see all kinds of activity during your ride: Sailboats, kayaks, paddleboarders, luxury yachts and even swimmers lapping in between boats.
Along the way you will see beautiful waterfront homes and mansions --- many celebrities have lived here (and some still do). Some even have semi- private beaches attached. Doesn’t that sound like the life?
But the most famous was John Wayne – that’s his former home alright.
You may recognize Pirate’s Cove from an opening shot of the TV show Gilligan’s Island (if you haven’t seen it, you have to check it out).
One of my favorite things about this area is how friendly the locals are, especially those fishing at the end of the docks.
Even the four-legged furry friends will run up to greet you!
See the newest addition to the harbor: an actual floating tiki bar! Not to be confused with the other Tiki Boat that has been offering fun charters since the 1970s. But if you do find your way to the floating tiki bar, make sure to bring along a designated driver as the OC Sheriff also patrols the harbor and you really don’t want to get in trouble with them.
You can even bring your own food and drinks of choice for a fun dinner experience on the water with great sunset views. Or you can “dock and dine” as I mentioned in my previous blog post.
There are many places around Newport where you can rent a Duffy boat by the hour, either on a self-guided basis or escorted basis (I mentioned a few options on last weeks blog post). If you like to use Groupons, check the options in Newport Beach as I have seen offers from a few different rental companies. But if there is anything you should take away from this today, just make sure you make it to the water in one way or another.
Love Duffy boats in Newport Harbor. Such a fun way to spend a relaxing afternoon. ❤
