Who ever knew that spending a day, not only touring the locations used for "The Sound of Music", but also singing along and re-enacting the movie would be so memorable during our trip to Austria.
I think I can speak for the majority and say we have all seen at some point in our lives the wonderful movie “The Sound of Music”. Even though I didn’t know where the movie was filmed, that opening scene gave me chills every time when I was younger. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking and I so desperately wanted to see it in person. When I found out that it was filmed in Austria, I knew I just had to take a trip there so I could live and breathe that movie. So a few years ago, my husband and I planned a trip to Austria. I was so excited I would finally be able to see the “Hills alive with music".
When my husband and I were prepping our trip, we found a few different Sound of Music tours that left out of Salzburg. Since all appear to hit the same sites, you really can’t go wrong with any of them. Not only do you have a chance to see WHERE your favorite scenes from the movie were filmed but you also have a chance to take in all the breathtaking scenery of Austria and Bavaria along the way.
Throughout the tour, our guide provided fun facts about the real Von Trapp family and the movie and how the two differed. For example, the Mondsee Cathedral is where the movie was filmed for the marriage of the Captain and Maria was not the actual church that the two were married in, which I thought was very interesting.
Another thing we were able to do was re-enact some of the scenes from the movie. I’ll preface that by saying, yes it was very cheesy, but gosh was it fun. If you are a die-hard “Sound of Music” fan, this is a must do. It took our trip to a whole new level of fun. Remember the Do-Re-Mi song and where Maria hits that really high note and she puts her hand on her head? Yep, I did that.
Not only did we get to re-enact some of the scenes but songs were intermittingly played from the movie in between stops and our guide talking in our van (by the end of the trip, we were ALL singing along). “Sixteen Going On Seventeen” was one of my favorite songs. Remember, that was the song Rolf and Liesl sang while they danced in the gazebo.
Also recognizable was the Leopoldskron Palace, which was the Captain’s lakeside house in the movie and where Maria fell in the lake. We didn’t realize this until we got there but apparently there are guest rooms available for those wanting to take the Sound of Music experience to the ultimate level and extend their stay. Unfortunately we did not hear about this until it was too late, so I’m telling you in case that is something you might want to do on your trip to Austria.
You also have a chance to act out the children’s scenes from the movie through out the tour – like when the kids are dancing around the fountain.
All of these were included in the tour and I would highly recommend throwing away your reservations and just being a kid again. Let’s face it, Austria and Bavaria are gorgeous, but you just can’t go wrong living out a movie such as “Sound of Music”. The hills really are alive with music!
